  • In this account of his grandmother, Pomare portrays a woman who was comfortable in both the Māori and Pakeha world. This ease of flowing into either community was due in part to the efforts of her parents. Miria’s mother, Mere Hape, ensured that Miria was fluent in the Māori language and was familiar with Māori tikanga. Her father, James Woodbine Johnson, employed a governess so that Miria would be taught French, music, literature and needlework. In 1903 Miria married Dr Maui Pomare and they lived at ‘Hiwiroa’ in Western Hutt. During the First World War Miria was the honorary president of the Soldiers’ Fund which supported troops overseas and organised receptions on their return. For this work she was awarded an OBE in 1918. She also worked for a number of other charitable trusts and maintained strong links with the Ngāti Poneke Club.
