Diane Matapuku has been a member of the Whanake Rangataua, a Māori martial arts group based in Wellington, which provided opportunities for Māori street kids. She was in her teens when she wrote this poem. Apirana Taylor included this with a collection of other poems written by Whanake Rangataua members.
