In 1981 R. R. Makutu was the Southern Māori Social Credit candidate. In his Social Credit statement published in Tu Tangata in 1981 he was described as “46, married with 1 child. Occupation is sales representative for Watties Canneries, formerly insurance agent, shearing contractor.”
